Safety & Contraindications with the Plant Work
Master Plants and Ayahuasca are safe when approached with proper preparation, in a ceremonial setting guided by an experienced shaman and facilitators with genuine knowledge of the medicine.
At Sinchi Runa, safety is our highest priority. Over our years as a healing center, we have developed careful protocols to ensure every participant can engage with the medicine as safely as possible.
Medical Screening & Your Responsibilities
Before any process begins, you will complete a Medical Screening questionnaire so we can carry out an individual evaluation. You are responsible for fully and honestly disclosing all medications, substances, and any physical or psychological conditions — past or present. Attending a plant process without doing so puts you at serious risk of harm.
For most contraindicated substances, you must be completely clear of them at least 4 weeks before the retreat. This means your last dose must be taken a minimum of 4 weeks prior — not merely the start of your taper. We can support you through this process alongside your doctor.
To protect you, it is essential that you disclose any of the following before your process:
Heart & Physical Conditions
Ayahuasca and the purge can bring strong emotions to the surface, temporarily elevating heart rate. Those with heart conditions, high or low blood pressure, or other chronic illnesses must obtain a medical evaluation from their doctor and inform us in advance so we can assess your situation. In most cases, safe participation is still possible with the right preparation.
Psychiatric History
Any history of psychiatric conditions, psychosis, seizures, or neurological conditions must be disclosed — whether formally diagnosed or not.
Psychiatric & Prescription Medications
All psychiatric medications are contraindicated, including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, antipsychotics, anticonvulsants, benzodiazepines, anti-Parkinson’s drugs, and MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors).
Any other prescription medications or supplements must also be disclosed.
Recreational Drugs & Narcotics
All recreational substances are strictly contraindicated, including cocaine, MDMA, amphetamines, and opioids. Alcohol and any other psychoactive substances must also be disclosed.
